The Executive Director of Liberia Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Prof. Wilson K. Tarpeh has stressed the urgent need to align environment and climate change with Liberia’s development plan, since everything is impacted by climate change.
Speaking at the closure meeting for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Project on January 13, 2021, Prof Tarpeh said that the inclusion of environment and climate change into the country’s development plan need to be shown and demonstrated because “climate change has massive and compelling effect on everything we do.”
The closure meeting for the UNDP-supported Green Climate Fund (GCF) financed project “To Advance the National Adaptation Plans (NAP) process for medium-term investment planning in climate-sensitive sectors” was held at Bella Casa Hotel in Sinkor.

Monrovia – The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Wednesday organized an event in celebration of the successful end of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Project.
The NAP Project Document titled: “To Advance the National Adaptation Plans (NAP) process for medium-term investment planning in climate-sensitive sectors” was signed on the 16 of October 2017 by the UNDP and the Government of Liberia. Artisanal and small-scale mining is the main source of income for more than 100,000 gold and diamond miners in Liberia.
Out of the 1,293 mining operations in the country, 1,142 (88.3 per cent) are artisanal and small-scale miners.
Weak legal and regulatory frameworks and limited institutional oversight contribute, however, to major revenue and income loss for both the Government of Liberia and artisanal miners, a release from the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia (EPA) said.
According to the governance and regulation shortfalls have also contributed to widespread environmental pollution, human rights violations and mounting conflict and instability at mining sites across Liberia.
