AUSTIN â Even with less traffic during the pandemic, Texas work zone fatalities increased 9% in 2020 compared to 2019. Thatâs why TxDOT is calling on drivers to make safety their number one priority at all times and especially when passing through active construction and maintenance work zones on the roadway.
TxDOTâs âBe Safe. Drive Smart.â campaign is marking National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 26â30, with safety tips to reduce work zone fatalities. Last year, there were more than 22,000 traffic crashes in Texas work zones with 186 people killed, including four road workers.
âWe know driving through work zones can be challenging,â said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. âThere can be extra congestion, slow-moving heavy equipment, temporary barriers, and vehicles that make sudden stops. We canât stress enough how important it is to give driving your full attention and slow downâfor your own safety and that of

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Most of us couldn’t imagine being on the job with speeding cars and trucks just feet away zooming past our desk, cubicle or other place of business.
But every day, highway construction and maintenance crews across Arizona face just such potentially dangerous scenarios, especially when many drivers don’t slow down or pay attention in work zones. Sadly, drivers and passengers are even more likely to be killed or seriously injured in work zone crashes.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to move over and slow down for highway workers during National Work Zone Awareness Week.
The goal of the week, which begins April 26 and continues through April 30, is to improve safety on interstate and highway construction zones, as well as maintenance work zones, according to a news release.
“It’s been five years since our TDOT family lost three employees struck and killed by passing motorists, and it’s still fresh in our memories,” TDOT Commissioner Clay Bright said. “Hundreds of TDOT employees are working on our highways each day. We need motorists to work with us by moving over and slowing down for TDOT workers or first responders working along our interstates and state routes. We ask drivers to pay attention to signs, observe the handsfree law, reduce your speed, and move over when possible.”
