Slow down, phone down for Work Zone Safety Week | News, Sports, Jobs

Spring typically heralds the start of another season road construction. As such, it’s worth reminding drivers that those working on road projects should be able to do their jobs safely, without worrying about the motorists passing by. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has proclaimed this to be Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be taking part in a nationwide campaign to spread awareness about safe driving as construction and maintenance activity increases. “One thing that unites us all as highway workers and motorists is that we all want to make it home to our families,” WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said. “Even the smallest distraction can lead to a tragedy on the highway, so we ask everyone to stay focused buckle up, phone down.”

Of those 800 people, more than 90% are drivers, their passengers, or passing pedestrians. There were seven fatal work zone crashes in Washington state last year, plus another 21 serious injury crashes, 302 crashes with minor injuries, and 798 others with just property damage. That’s a lot of people not paying attention to the orange cones, lane reductions, flaggers, and other warnings. Pierce County had the highest reported crashes in the state, with just under 500 in 2020.
