SALEM The Salem Parks Commission agreed Wednesday to go forward with plans to become a Bee City USA.
Commission members first heard about Bee City USA from Parks Director Shane Franks at last month’s meeting, but requested additional information regarding the benefits since the cost was $200 per year.
On Wednesday, city resident Sara Baer and master gardener Marilyn McKinley addressed commissioners about the idea, urging them of the importance of bees to pollinate plants and how Bee City USA can provide educational materials for programs in the community.
McKinley helped design the pollinator garden at Waterworth Memorial Park and talked about how crucial bees are to the food chain.

Friends of DuPont Forest will receive 100 free hours of public relations and marketing services thanks to the Stand Up Initiative, launched by Darby Communications in 2016.
The initiative is now a team effort from Darby Communications and Status Forward, and the agencies will help Friends of DuPont with its Share the Trails campaign. The campaign aims to address user conflict and harmonization on the trails, as DuPont State Recreational Forest attracts more than 1 million hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, equestrians and other visitors every year. The effort will include a mix of social media assessment and strategy, website and wayfinding design support.

The city parks department is exploring the idea of becoming a Bee City USA to promote pollinator gardens and possibly provide educational programs about bees.
City Parks Commission members want to know more, though, about the benefits of being a Bee City USA.
Commission Chair John Panezott said he knows the importance of bees, but if the commission is going to pay an annual registration fee of $200, “tell me what I’m going to get from them for my $200.”
Parks Director Shane Franks said two or three people approached him about the idea of Bee City USA, which is along the same lines as Tree City USA but with bees. He approached Salem Mayor John Berlin to see if there would be any issue with it and he said there wouldn’t be.
