VIJAYAWADA: The State government on Saturday moved a house motion petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court challenging the State Election Commissioner releasing the schedule for panchayat elections and sought a stay on the election proceedings. The High Court will take up the petition for hearing on Monday. On Friday, State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar had released the schedule for panchayat elections. According to the SEC, the election process will commence on January 23. The elections will be held in four phases from February 5 to 17.

Overruling the objections raised by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government, the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission on Friday night announced the schedule for conduct of elections to gram panchayats in four phases beginning February 5. State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, with whom the Jagan regime has been engaged in a battle since March last year, announced the schedule hours after his meeting with Chief Secretary Aditya Nath Das and other top officials.
Reacting to this, the government said announcement of gram panchayat poll schedule was unilateral and amounted to violation of the Supreme Court orders. The SEC has adamantly announced the poll schedule without considering the state governments views.

The SEC told the court that despite repeated reminders, the state government did not release funds and incorporated a stifling condition that the government s prior sanction be necessary for incurring the expenditure.
