FROM two elections, a pandemic, ongoing health sagas and the opening of many new facilities there were plenty of ups and downs for Gladstone in 2020. Here are some of the highlights from the year that was. It was history in the making as 165 students walked through the gates at Calliope State High School for the first time in January.
Excitement and nerves was a prevalent theme between Year 7 and 8 students as they began the first day of their secondary education.

Hummingbird House received more than $6500 from Coles shoppers and team members in Mackay. Stores at Northern Beaches, Parkside Plaza and Caneland Central were praised for their efforts and donations, despite the financial challenges from COVID-19. Parkside Plaza Coles store manager Josh Back said the appeal was an opportunity for his team to raise money for Queensland s only children s hospice. Mackay Regional Council Strategic Planning manager Jaco Ackerman and Mayor Greg Williamson at the Northern Beaches Community Hub site. A library, pool, and essential government services could soon find home in Mackay s fastest growing district as Northern Beaches residents are called on to shape a $25 million development.

Councillor Cherie Rutherford’s name has appeared on the candidates list this morning for the Rockhampton Regional Council 2021 by-election.
The Division 5 Councillor was elected to Rockhampton City Council in 2004 and has been successful in elections ever since.
She previously worked for council in the parks, sports and recreation department and was Tom Wyatt’s personal assistant. Cherie Rutherford.
In 2016, she was elected as Deputy Mayor, a role she held for the four-year term until March 2020.
She is now the Sports, Parks and Public Spaces Portfolio holder and has been a longtime supporter and spokepserson for the Rockhampton Zoo.
