Even in these uncertain times, people still hear the words âyou have cancerâ for the first time. Thatâs why I recently spent a day meeting with Sen Shane Reeves & Sen Dawn White virtually.
As a cancer caregiver and advocate, I wanted our elected officials to know that preventing suffering and death from cancer is still critically important.
Tobacco use is still the leading preventable cause of cancer. That is why I asked our lawmakers to increase funding for the stateâs Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program.
Properly funding these programs has been proven to reduce tobacco use rates and ultimately combat tobacco-related illness and death, which is especially important now since we are still facing skyrocketing youth tobacco use.

Governor Andrew Cuomo forged ahead on Monday, appearing at a mass COVID-19 vaccination site in New York City.
Thatâs despite the new accusations of sexual harassment and bullying that surfaced over the weekend and the growing number of calls for his resignation.
Fellow democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and South Buffalo Assemblyman Pat Burke are among those calling for Cuomo to step down.
âIt is this scandal, but there is scandal fatigue and we just have to be able to do our jobs,â Burke told Reporter Ali Touhey when reached by phone on Monday.

BOISE â Sixty elected officials in Idaho completed the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Healthâs annual Steps for Schools walking challenge, earning $50,000 for schools in the state. The Steps for Schools walking challenge encourages Idaho legislators and other elected officials to be active, set a
good example and earn money to donate to a school or school district of their choice.Â
The schools can use those funds to purchase equipment or sponsor programming that encourages children to be active. These funds also can be used for any COVID-19 relief efforts happening at the school.
Participants had two options in this yearâs challenge: average 5,000 steps per day in February to earn $500 or average 10,000 steps per day to earn $1,000 for a school or school district. There were 40 participants who reached the 10,000-step goal this year.
