New unit opens at Christ Hospital focusing on the critically ill
New unit at Christ Hospital focuses on longer-term care By Amber Jayanth | January 22, 2021 at 8:55 AM EST - Updated January 22 at 8:55 AM
CINCINNATI (FOX19) - As local hospitals remain overwhelmed from COVID-19, a new special unit has opened in an effort to free up hospital beds.
A Select Specialty Hospital opened up this week here at Christ Hospital. Its main goal is to focus on those who are critically ill, which will provide some relief for other areas of the hospital.
“We are starting to feel the squeeze for sure - the first time I think I’ve ever said that. Usually, I say we’re doing okay. We are looking at about round a 90% capacity right now across the hospitals across the region. Our urban systems are now operating even a little bit above that right now. So space is one of the things we worry about, but staffing is another,” RN Tiffany Mattingly said.
31-year old Gus Mormann passed away last Friday at Select Specialty Hospital in Des Moines.
Mormann was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on December 10
th after his motorcycle crashed on Highway 13 north of Manchester during a pursuit with authorities.
The Iowa State Patrol told KMCH on Wednesday that the incident still remains under investigation. They are not releasing any further information at this time and will provide a statement once the investigation is complete.
Funeral services for Mormann will be held Friday in Colesburg.

Proceeds from the loan will be used to pay off the existing first mortgage on 31.32 acres of raw land in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Remaining proceeds will be used as working capital to update site approvals.
Located just a few blocks from Select Specialty Hospital and major retail, the property is zoned as a research park district, ideal for business and commercial use. It is currently listed for sale at $4.9 million.
According to Kevin Wolfer, CEO of Kennedy Funding, the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey-based direct private lender, the borrower experienced roadblocks applying for funding from traditional lenders, despite their extraordinary credit rating, and collateral that would typically be a significant deciding factor for many banks.
