Montgomery picks firm to plan Paterson Court, Centennial Hill revitalization View Comments A revitalization effort in Montgomery s Paterson Court and Centennial Hill communities is a step closer to reality. The city and the Montgomery Housing Authority landed a $450,000 planning grant in January for the project. On Wednesday, they announced that APD Urban Planning was picked to lead the design and planning efforts for the revitalization. The federal grant was one of 11 awarded through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative to help local leaders transform neighborhoods. Mayor Steven Reed s office said the local award will be used to stimulate affordable housing and economic development in Paterson Court neighborhood and the whole Centennial Hill community.

The dwellings, originally built with the intention to later tear down, house more than 200 impoverished Wilmington families. Spread out amongst 26 acres, the public housing structures decay as investors pour millions into revitalizing and enriching the surrounding land. Hillcrest was built as temporary housing to support the efforts of the Second World War. It’s now 80 years old and crumbling. Meanwhile, City of Wilmington and New Hanover County leaders frantically search for a solution to the area’s lack of affordable housing as the workforce population skyrockets.
