Des Moines County Conservation hosting Night Hike and Owl Prowl

January 29, 2021 Burlington, Ia-  Des Moines County Conservation will be hosting a night hike and owl prowl. On Thursday, February 11 at 7:00 pm at Starr’s Cave Nature Center this hour and a half-long program, led by a Des Moines County Conservation naturalist, will include a short presentation regarding owls and calling for barred owls using recorded calls. Then participants will head out for a 2-mile round trip night hike and, if all goes as planned, owl prowlers will hear owls talk back and might even get to see one swoop silently down for a closer look. Since silent listening is required, children must be accompanied by an adult. Masks will be required to enter the nature center. Space is limited. Registration is required. County Hike a Park series

January 28, 2021 Burlington, Ia- A Hike A Park series will start on Tuesday, February 9th to introduce visitors to the various parks in Des Moines County. Des Moines County Conservation will be leading these 1-4 mile hikes every other Tuesday at 2:00 pm. Each of the hikes will take place at a different park in the county, and the first hike will be starting from the shelter house at Hunt Woods Recreation Area. The second hike will be at Big Hollow Recreation Area on February 23rd. Hikes will be led by Naturalist Marcus Nack. There is no fee to join the hike, and no registration is required.

Annual Bald Eagle Watch still taking place

Burlington, Ia- Des Moines County Conservation has announced that the annual Bald Eagle watch will still be taking place later this month. The event, which is designed to learn about and observe bald eagle migration, will take place on January 23rd, with two programs from 10:00 am-11:00 am and 11:30 am-12:30 pm at Lock and Dam 18. After a brief program on eagles by special guest Lori Carnes, attendants will be observing bald eagles. There is no fee, but registration is required for the program. Things like that funky little concrete bridge across Flint Creek on Highway 99 on the north edge of Burlington, just past the Case-New Holland plant. That short span connects Burlington to the county towns along the Mississippi River. It s how all the Case New Holland workers who live in Mediapolis, Wapello and Oakville get to and from their jobs every day.
