Keep Moving On! That has been the mantra of everyone over the past year. The opera/musical theatre students, under the direction of Dr. Julie Anne Wieck and assisted by collaborative pianist, Elena Panchenko, have been rehearsing remotely all semester on a wonderful array of music by the Broadway genius, Stephen Sondheim. Songs from many of his hit musicals have been rehearsed via Zoom and then recorded by each singer individually to be combined by cast member Bryce Weber, a composition graduate student in the program. The cast also includes a vocal performance graduate student, Kayla Ray, a senior vocal performance major, Anya Guadamuz and a senior pre-vet student, Jadyn Denham. Joining the cast are Dr. Wieck and Dr. Angelica Dunsavage, another music faculty member, as well as two WSU alumni; Andrew Turner, now performing with Des Moines Metro and Virgina Opera companies

Broadway and Opera star Zachary James (South Pacific, Coram Boy, The Addams Family, Metropolitan Opera s Akhnaten) is bringing his award-winning cabaret show ON BROADWAY to the digital airwaves. James celebrated solo show, recorded for Des Moines Metro Opera at Philadelphia s acclaimed Chris Jazz Cafe, will be released as a film and digital album starting on Friday, March 19 on all streaming platforms.
The project features James alongside Broadway pianist Charity Wicks in his award-winning one-man show, which earned him four awards from Broadway World, including Vocalist of the Decade and Performer of the Decade. A winter storm brought a round of heavy snow to the region, restricting travel and halting classes Monday and Tuesday. In total, most in south central Iowa received between 6-10” of snow, with more recorded near the Des Moines Metro and other locations mainly in southwest Iowa. Tow bans were in place throughout central Iowa, and travel was not advised on many state highways Tuesday morning due to low visibility and poor road conditions.
