Mayor Frank Cownie removed the mandatory face covering requirement in Des Moines Friday afternoon, effective immediately, in alignment with Centers for Disease Control recommendations. On Thursday, the CDC said those fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no longer have to wear a mask indoors or outdoors or maintain social distancing. Cownie says those who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to continue wearing a mask, but they are not required to do so. Des Moines mask mandate had been in effect since March of last year.

Des Moines police were called to investigate a shooting around 11:20 p.m. on Friday. It happened in the 1100 block of 19th Street. When emergency crews got to the scene, they found 52-year-old Darrell Merriwether of Clive with a gunshot wound. Des Moines Fire Department medics took Merriwether to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center where he died a few hours later.

Public education is one of our nation’s best ideas, and the persistent attempts on the part of politicians to undermine it with the misleading rhetoric of “choice” represents a real threat to the future of democracy. Known as “common schools” in the 19th century, public schools were devised as a way for those on the margins of society to better themselves and become upwardly mobile. The also became the most logical place perhaps the only place where future generations, especially within a pluralistic context, could coexist with at least a measure of comity and learn the rudiments of democracy.
