Egypt takes delivery of more Lurssen patrol boats

AIS data showed a second batch of three vessels arrived at the port of Alexandria aboard the heavy-lift ship Rolldock Sun on 14 February, Jane’s reports. The vessel left Germany on 28 January carrying a 60 metre patrol boat bearing the pennant 710 and two 40 metre OPB 41 (previously marketed as the CSB 40) coastal patrol craft bearing the pennant numbers 705 and 706. In November 2020 it emerged that Egypt would be receiving nine Lurssen patrol boats and a single coastal defence boat from Germany under a 130 million euro deal after the contract with the original customer, Saudi Arabia, fell through.

Fincantieri kicks off SEA Defence activities February 4, 2021, by Naida Hakirevic Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has officially started its activities within the European SEA Defence project. The project has been selected within the European Defense Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP 2019) and started last December. The EDIDP, which paves the way for the European Defence Fund, focuses on strengthening the European defence technological and industrial base, as well as on increasing the EU’s autonomy and technological leadership. The SEA Defence project is supported by participating EU Member States, led by the Netherlands Ministry of Defence. The grant agreement worth a total of about EUR 14 million which finances the project was signed by the EC, marking an important step in EU naval cooperation.

Hundreds protest as top court hears petitions calling to probe Netanyahu in submarine affair

Follow Jan. 25, 2021 The High Court of Justice heard arguments on Monday regarding petitions asking to open a criminal investigation against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the submarines and missile corvettes corruption affair. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside of the Supreme Court building in Jerusalem before the hearing, having arrived in a convoy of dozens of cars that travelled from Tel Aviv to the capital carrying inflatable submarines on their roofs in protest. At the center of the submarine affair are two agreements between Israel and the German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems made five years ago: One was to buy three submarines for 1.5 billion euros, and the other was the purchase of missile corvettes for the purpose of defending Israel’s offshore natural gas fields and production platforms for 430 million euros.
