DPP’s Su Chen-ching, aide to post bail of more than NT$11.5m in SOGO case By Chang Wen-chuan and Jake Chung / Staff reporter, with staff writer The Taipei District Court yesterday allowed Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Su Chen-ching (蘇震清) and his office director, Yu Hsueh-yang (余學洋), to post bail of NT$10 million (US$351,964) and NT$1.5 million respectively, for their alleged involvement in a dispute over the ownership of Pacific SOGO Department Store. Su and Yu, who had been detained since September last year, would be allowed to return to their residences, but would be prohibited from leaving the country and required to report to police offices in their respective residential areas every Monday evening in Pingtung City for Su and in New Taipei City’s Sinjhuang District (新莊) for Yu, the court said.

Ex-SID prosecutor questioned over alleged fraud plot

A former prosecutor with the now-defunct Special Investigation Division (SID) surnamed Chang (張) was released on bail yesterday after being questioned about an alleged fraud scheme, the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office said. Chang was released on NT$1.5 million (US$52,685) bail and barred from traveling overseas, prosecutors said. His wife was released without bail and was also barred from traveling overseas, the office said. Chang, who is a lawyer, and his wife were questioned, and their home and office were searched on Monday amid allegations that Chang was involved in real-estate investment fraud. The Supreme Court yesterday ordered the retrial of eight Sunflower movement figures sentenced last year to two to four years in prison over their roles in the occupation of the Executive Yuan in 2014. In remanding the case to the High Court, the Supreme Court said that the defendants were exercising “civil disobedience” and should receive more lenient sentences. Club owner, three police officers held over bribes By Jason Pan / Staff reporter Three Taipei police officers and one nightclub proprietor were on Friday detained after questioning in the latest phase of a probe into top-ranking police officers who allegedly took bribes from nightclubs and sex trade businesses in Zhongshan District (中山). Police officers Wu Yi-ming (吳翊銘), Tu Wei-lien (涂維廉) and Chen Yen-an (陳彥安), as well as Chiu Hsin-wei (邱信瑋), a Jialibao Group nightclub proprietor, were denied bail. The four were summoned for questioning after the Ministry of Justice’s Investigation Bureau and the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office raided eight locations on Thursday. It was the sixth time since 2018 that raids have been conducted in relation to the case. It allegedly involves officials and officers at Taipei’s Zhongshan Police Precinct, which has jurisdiction over Taipei’s famous entertainment district.
