JOHANNESBURG - SABC unions said that their members would embark on another strike at the public broadcaster over the protracted retrenchment process.
The Communication Workers Union and Bemawu decided on this action at a meeting on Wednesday.
Last year, employees angrily confronted management at the broadcaster’s headquarters in Auckland Park over the retrenchments and later staged pickets at some regional offices.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) and the Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU) met on Wednesday and decided to take to the streets.
The SABC is currently in the process of retrenchments that will affect more than 300 employees.
CWU spokesperson, Aubrey Tshabalaba, says the unions have not received any feedback from the SABC Board, over concerns that additional workers are now also receiving redundancy notices.

Towards telecoms strike in BT? Submitted by AWL on 12 January, 2021 - 10:29 In December, BT Group workers in the Communication Workers Union (CWU) voted by a 97.9% majority for industrial action to defend job security and conditions, in a consultative ballot. A BT Group worker and CWU activist explains the background to the dispute and other struggles in BT.
The national consultative ballot against job cuts and compulsory redundancies across BT is the logical result of the failure of industrial leadership by the CWU Telecoms Executive for over a decade, and also of the disastrous outcome of the 2019 general election for communication workers.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has told Openreach it is to ballot members on industrial action following what it claims is the company s decision to ignore consultation and instead hire engineers on a different grade and structure.
The specific area of Openreach that CWU said is the subject of an ongoing dispute is Repayments Projects, a unit tasked with diverting already laid copper wires and fibre cables for new developments including HS2, a high-speed rail line linking up London, the Midlands, the North, and Scotland.
She said the SABC was committed to its public mandate of informing, educating and entertaining citizens in all official languages. She said the broadcaster had growth strategies in place aimed at ensuring that its radio stations remained the leading source of public-service content.
Meanwhile, the Communication Workers Union said it would be embarking on a strike from Monday linked to the retrenchments. The CWU’s Aubrey Tshabalala said they had the support of another union at the SABC, whose members will be joining them.
“We are still working on a plan of action on how we will navigate the level 3 regulations. We are still looking at creative ways on how to deal with them,” Tshabalala said.
