THE LEFT-wing Bakers, Food and Allied Workersâ Union (BFAWU) yesterday announced the launch of an upcoming membership consultation on whether the trade union should remain affiliated to the Labour Party.
In a statement by national president Ian Hodson, who has been critical of Keir Starmer, the union has declared that the âpolitical directionâ of the party under its new leadership has âgiven members cause for concernâ.
Hodson cites the approach taken by Starmer during Covid, which the Labour leader describes as âconstructiveâ but the BFAWU considers to be too supportive of the government amid âavoidable deaths, job losses and hardshipâ.

The Communication Workersâ Union (CWU), which represents the Hilton staff, is now calling on the Government to intervene to stop the lay-offs or it will take the matter to the Industrial Court as the decision did not follow good industrial relations practice.
CWU secretary general Clyde Elder said yesterday the union received the shocking news of the temporary lay-offs on Monday when it met the hotel management to discuss what it thought would have been âschedulingâ for the month of January.
