A gay couple adopt a child and start a family together. In China, where many barely acknowledge the existence of the LGBT community, this touching real-life story was made into a movie by 19-year-old Ran Yinxiao.
Forbidden Love in Heaven, released in July on several Chinese streaming platforms, follows the story of a man who finds a child on the streets and raises the boy with his male partner.
Producing the film was a huge undertaking for the aspiring director from Chongqing, in China’s southwest. It took seven months and cost 50,000 yuan (S$10,100).
“This was my bold attempt to explore the difficulties that sexual minorities face in starting a family,” Ran says. “My thinking was that if three different people without any blood ties could start a family, then this must be the world’s strongest family.”

Disinformation has been growing since the outbreak of COVID-19 last December in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. Social media users – including world leaders such as Donald Trump – shared false information about the virus, intensifying an already dire “infodemic.”
In developing countries like Pakistan, people are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories and false information. According to one poll, only 3 percent of people in Pakistan had no misconceptions about the virus while one-third believed various conspiracy theories to be true.
This situation has added to the workload of journalists in Pakistan. They have been looking for online trainings, webinars, and workshops to learn new skills to verify available online information.
