NIB: Graduating students discuss their time at UCR

Highlander Grad Students – Courtesy of UCR News The official end of the 2020-2021 school year is drawing nearer, meaning a new cohort of graduates will soon be parting from UCR. Though this school year came with many new and unprecedented challenges and hardships, many soon-to-be graduates look upon their last handful of years at UCR with definite fondness. The Highlander spoke to some graduating seniors about their experiences at UCR and what plans they have for the future. Brian Lee, fourth-year business administration major: Brian Lee affirmed that his time at UCR was enjoyable overall, though he admitted that there were some downsides to attending the university, like the stiflingly hot weather, poor air quality and general lack of desirable amenities around and outside of campus. Winter Soulstice is a night of soulful vibes with a tinge of social activism

Highlander Leo Yue /The Highlander The Associated Student Program Board (ASPB) hosted 2021’s Winter Soulstice on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m., featuring Jorja Smith as the headliner and Pink Sweats as the supporting act. The event came just in time to close off one of the last major events ASPB was hosting for Black History Month; both of the performers for the soulful night are rising Black artists that let their voice and lyricism shine in their stripped down tunes. Pink Sweats, who boasts over 14 million listeners on Spotify and close to 234 million views on YouTube, began his set wearing his iconic pink colors. The singer songwriter lost no time as he introduced himself and started with his first song, “17.” He was accompanied with a single guitar, played by a musician who occasionally accompanied him on vocals. The Philadelphia native got his start as a vocalist and songwriter for artists like Rosie Bondz and Aaron Camper, but has started releasing music on his own

Raveena exudes mellow romanticism into her art and artistic presence

Highlander Ryan Poon /The Highlander 26-year-old singer and songwriter Raveena graced the screens of dozens of UCR students on Wednesday, Feb. 3 for Associated Student Program Board’s (ASPB) “Mindfulness and Meditation with Raveena.” In this 1 1/2-hour-long event, the R&B and indie soul artist guided the attendees through a 30-minute meditation and affirmation session, which she followed with a performance of some of her most popular songs and a Q&A. ASPB opened the event by announcing the giveaway prizes attendees had a chance to win, which included merchandise for the event and an annual Calm subscription while students flooded the chat with excited remarks about wanting to de-stress. Raveena appeared in a simple white room, wearing her signature eccentric earrings and exuding a peaceful presence. She explained that she had begun her journey into meditation and mindfulness earlier this year when she was going through a depressive episode that compelled her to make a c
