BLACK hands placed outside the Aboriginal Tent Embassy this morning (April 15) represent the 474 indigenous people who have died in police custody in Australia over the past 30 years.  The “Sea of Hands” installation, organised by advocacy group ANTaR ACT, marks the 30th anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, which made 339 recommendations at the time. It also raises awareness of the disproportionately high rate of Aboriginal incarceration in the capital, says spokesperson for the advocacy group’s local chapter, Rita Metzenrath.

Guitarist brothers explore Australian history and identity through music

Close These are just some of the 18 objects selected from the National Museum of Australia’s collection for the stories they tell about our national history, culture and identity. In a new project, they’ve been brought to life through music, with guitarists and brothers Slava and Leonard Grigoryan writing new pieces to respond to each one. The Grigoryans’ music and the objects themselves are being showcased by ABC Classic across the radio and online, as well as on a new album.  The project was distinctively ‘2020’, with Slava and Leonard separated by state border closures while they were writing the music.

Aussies saddened by man who took off Australian flag

Australians have been left saddened after a man was embarrassed to wear the national flag as a cape on Australia Day for fear of copping abuse .  The man rushed to take off an Australian flag displayed across his back after he stumbled across an Invasion Day gathering in Byron Bay. He was filmed standing in the playground at Apex Park, near Main Beach, on Tuesday, as the nation marked January 26 with both protests and celebrations.  Footage of the ordeal went viral but now Australians are asking why the man should have felt such shame .
