Warmer weather, sunshine, and blooming flowers are all characteristics of springtime that everyone looks forward to after a harsh winter. While we’re enjoying the change of seasons, it’s easy to forget the more unfavorable issues to consider, such as ticks, especially if you’re spending more time outside.
Tick season begins simultaneously with the start of spring but doesn’t end until mid-to-late October. This is the time of year that you should be checking for tick bites, as they can transmit Lyme disease.
What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that ticks carry if they bite infected mice or deer. Infected ticks can then transmit the disease to you through their bite. This disease affects thousands of Pennsylvanians each year and is the most reported infection transmitted by an insect to humans in the United States.

The last time one of my patients was arrested for drug possession, we never saw him at my medical clinic again. He had been excited to start treatment for his infection and for his substance use. Sadly, our first reaction when he didn’t show up to clinic was to check the obituaries. And then the local jails, which is where he was. Just three weeks into his treatment, he never ended up completing it.
“That’s the crime. Lyme disease mimics more than 300 different illnesses. Doctors are not ruling it out in Canada before they’re giving their patients a diagnosis. That’s a crime. It’s seriously messed up.” The disease is caused by bacteria called Borrelia and is spread by bites from infected ticks. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment are important because Lyme disease can lead to serious complications if left untreated, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). Freeman does not blame doctors, but points the finger at Infectious Disease Society of America guidelines that, if not followed by Canadian doctors, could lead to harsh criticism and negative impact on their careers.

Few additional cases of the rare, but serious blood clots that prompted the pause have emerged, which could increase the likelihood that vaccinations restart as early as this weekend.
The CDC and FDA initially recommended pausing the rollout on April 13 based on reports of six cases of rare blood clots. The 21 members of ACIP held a hastily called meeting the next day to evaluate the evidence. They decided that they needed more time to make a recommendation.
