Chief Specialist of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated that the number of people attending Christmas services has been limited to 50.
Churches across the Island belonging to the Catholic Church, the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka and other groups celebrate Christmas on 24th eve or/and at different times during the 25th with a majority holding services from early morning.
During the pandemic some of these groups resorted to online services with the groups with larger spaces conducting services based on seating capacity and health guidelines.
It has been customary for churches to conduct services on the 31st night in December popularly known as watch night services and/or services on the first of January.
