Moderna storage requirements may be a practical benefit over Pfizer

Deakin University Chair of Epidemiology Professor Catherine Bennett says the Moderna vaccine is "very similar" to the Pfzier vaccine, but its storage requirements may be seen as a more “practical”. Australia has secured 25 million doses of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine - which is awaiting approval from the TGA - after a deal was struck between the federal government and the pharmaceutical giant. Professor Bennett told Sky News the Moderna vaccine has a similar efficacy rate as the Pfzier vaccine at over 90 per cent but it can be stored in a normal freezer compared to the minus 70 degrees Celsius required for Pfizer. “It’s also something that can be kept in a fridge after you’ve defrosted it to start to administer doses,” she said. “So there might be some practical benefits of Moderna over Pfizer as well that might help us in the latter part of the year when we’re trying to vaccinate that younger adult population”.

Important to ‘keep a watchful eye’ on COVID situations in NSW and Vic13/05/2021|5min Deakin University Chair of Epidemiology Professor Catherine Bennett says despite New South Wales and Victoria both recording another day of no community COVID cases it is important to “keep a watchful eye” on the situation. Professor Bennett said while there have no further cases in NSW since the man passed on the virus to his wife “there could be those odd cases that haven’t been picked up”. “So it does pay to keep following this for a few weeks to try and reassure ourselves that we’re not just missing something, that we really do have this contained,” she said.

Australians will be encouraged to vaccinate if shorter-term rewards play out

Australians will be encouraged to vaccinate if shorter-term rewards play out 14/04/2021|5min Deakin University Chair of Epidemiology Professor Catherine Bennett says Australians will be encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if they can see the shorter-term rewards starting to play out. Professor Bennett spoke to Sky News host Chris Kenny about issues relating to vaccines and Australia s border. We ve got to start to see some of those conversations happening about what s safe or what else we need to do, or what are going to be those benchmarks that say we re at a point now where we can take this next step, Professor Bennett said.
