ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has renewed the licences of Telenor, Ufone and Jazz to operate in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan for another 15 years.
These licences were to be expired on June 25 (today).
PTA chairman Amir Azeem Bajwa and chief executive officers (CEOs) of Telenor, Jazz and Ufone along with senior representatives of these cellular mobile operators (CMOs) attended the licence renewal signing ceremony held at the PTA headquarters in Islamabad on Wednesday.

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunications has approved the allocation of funds for the Universal Service Fund (USF) projects for high-speed internet services and contracts for next-generation broadband, ARY News reported on Monday.
The approval was given in the 77th meeting of the Board of Directors of Universal Service Fund (USF) chaired by IT secretary Dr Sohail Rajput today. The board approved the USF’s budget worth approximately Rs18 billion for the fiscal year 2021-22.
Four USF projects worth approximately Rs2.14 billion have been approved by the board to provide high-speed internet services to approximately 2.2 million people in un-served and under-served areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces.
In a bid to provide high-speed internet services to the masses in three Sindh cities, the federal government on Monday launched a broadband project worth Rs 344 million.

Minister for IT and Telecommunication Syed Aminul Haq has alleged that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is harassing the IT and telecom sector by sending tax notices, adding that the move may affect export remittances.
Chairing a meeting of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on IT, the minister expressed concern over the issuance of tax notices to the IT and telecom sector by the FBR. He said that it was spreading confusion among the industry people and investors, which could affect the process of stabilisation through remittances. In the past, the FBR had sent a notice to Jazz telecom company and even sealed its head office in Islamabad that resulted in a legal battle in the Islamabad High Court.
