Saskatchewan making progresson suicide prevention work

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing an update on suicide prevention initiatives across the province to mark the one-year anniversary of the release of  Pillars for Life: The Saskatchewan Suicide Prevention Plan.  This plan focuses on efforts to support individuals and families at risk of suicide. The loss of one life to suicide is too many, Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health Minister Everett Hindley said.  We continue to work closely with our partners on the priorities in the  Pillars for Life plan.  I am pleased to provide an update on what has been accomplished and where we re focusing this year.

Concerns Raised from CUPE Local 5430 of Microbiology Testing at Yorkton Hospital Being Cut and Samples Sent to Regina

By Ryan Young Apr 30, 2021 | 4:22 PM According to CUPE Local 5430, the Saskatchewan Health Authority is cutting microbiology testing at the Yorkton lab and starting this Sunday, samples from Yorkton and area will be sent to Regina for processing. “Our Microbiology lab diagnoses critical illnesses such as staph infections, sepsis, meningitis, and post-op infections. The range of tests the government is cutting include microbial organism identification and sensitivity reporting, which is used to identify which treatment options should be given to patients to effectively counter infections,” said Linda Renkas, Regional Vice-President, CUPE 5430 in a news release. “If treatment or diagnosis is delayed, the consequences can be life threatening.”

VISITOR RESTRICTIONS EASING FOR RESIDENTS IN CARE HOMES

Families of residents in long-term care homes and personal care homes in Saskatchewan will soon be able to safely spend more time together, thanks to the COVID-19 vaccination program. Starting on Thursday, April 29, long-term care and personal care homes will be able to welcome an unlimited number of family members or support people, two at a time, to visit fully vaccinated residents if at least 90 per cent of residents have been fully vaccinated and three weeks have elapsed since the last second dose vaccinations. These homes will also be able to allow up to four family members or support people to visit outdoors.  Fully vaccinated residents who go on outings will no longer be required to quarantine upon their return to a home.

Saskatchewan is allowing care homes with high COVID-19 vaccination rates to allow visitors, even if those visitors haven’t been vaccinated themselves. The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and province announced the change Thursday. Starting next Thursday, if long-term and personal care homes that have had at least 90 per cent of residents fully vaccinated, and if three weeks have passed since the last residents received a second dose of vaccinations, they will be able to welcome an unlimited number of family members or support people two at a time.
