Your engine is a speaker, or at least your internal combustion engine was. But the motor in any electric car is definitely not a speaker. Electric cars have no exhaust note, and carmakers are still trying to figure out what to do about the loss of one of the best sensory aspects of driving.
BMW has asked Hans Zimmer ofHollywoodfame for help making new EV sounds, and it’s given us a small soundbite of what it calls “BMW IconicSounds Electric,” which is just the sound of its upcoming EV M cars:

BMW’s collaboration with Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer will extend beyond BMW i products. Today, BMW M announced that Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale, Creative Director Sound at the BMW Group produced a distinctive driving sound specially for electric M cars. “Every BMW has its own character, which is reflected in the sound it makes,” says film music creator and Academy Award winner Zimmer. “So for the electrically driven BMW M models we have developed a driving sound which accentuates their emotional driving experience particularly vividly and ensures their performance can be felt with even greater intensity.”

Academy Award winner helps develop BMW IconicSounds Electric – including for battery-powered BMW M cars
BMW has teamed up with Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer to produce IconicSounds Electric – a range of synthesised tones for the German car-maker’s electrified vehicles.
Fitted as standard in the all-new BMW iX (pictured here in silver) and available via Remote Software Upgrade for other EVs such as the BMW iX3, which will also be released in Australia late this year, IconicSounds Electric will be available as an option for BMW i4 Gran Coupe (pictured here in white) due here in early 2022.
