SHIMLA: In a heart-rending incident in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, a man was forced to carry the body of his mother, who died of Covid-19, for cremation on his shoulders as none of his relatives, villagers or district administration offered any help for fear of contracting the deadly virus.
The distressing image is of Veer Singh, from Ranital area of Kangra district. He cremated his mother, who was former up-pradhan of Bhangwar panchayat and died at home on Wednesday, all alone.

India witnessed its highest spike 3,86,452 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Friday and 3,498 fatalities due to virus infection, according to Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Congress leader and former finance minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday attacked the union government over mismanagement of Covid situation and said the boat with 130 crore people is sinking.

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday asked the Centre to have a “relook” at its stand on door-to-door vaccination for the elderly and bed-ridden and to consider the issue by May 6, the next date of hearing.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni said it would be a “choice between the devil and the deep sea for the elderly when the Centre’s counsel said managing any adverse event following immunization (AEFI) may pose a challenge since many of those who are bed-ridden or very advanced in age may have some other existing health conditions or co-morbidities.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had on Wednesday informed the court that door-to-door vaccination was not possible due to various reasons including the possibility of contamination and wastage of vaccine.
Agencies Don t close the chapter saying it is not possible. This ought not to be the policy. The Union Government will have to give a relook to its policy and do something for the elderly people.
The policy needs a relook by experts. You cannot leave old people to die, Chief Justice Datta said.
