World Health Organization declares Indian coronavirus variant of concern

The B1617 variant was, till now, deemed a variant of interest by the WHO. The global health body, in a press conference held on Monday, said preliminary studies show the B1617 mutation spreads more easily than other variants and the original virus. The variant has already spread to more than 30 countries, according to the WHO. The WHO had already classified the UK (B117), South African (B1351) and Brazilian (P1) variants of Covid-19 as variants of concern. A mutation is elevated from a variant of interest to a variant of concern (VOC) when it shows evidence of fulfilling at least one of several criteria, including easy transmission, more severe illness, reduced neutralisation by antibodies or reduced effectiveness of treatment and vaccines.

However, the country recorded more recoveries during this period as 3,56,082 new discharges were reported. With 3,876 new deaths due to COVID-19, the cumulative toll mounted to 2,49,992 deaths. The total positive cases now stands at 2,29,92,517, including 1,90,27,304 recoveries. At present, there are currently 37,15,221 active coronavirus cases in the country. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as many as 30,56,00,187 samples have been tested up to May 10, including 18,50,110 yesterday.

The Government of India is receiving international donations and aid of COVID-19 relief medical supplies and equipment since April 27, 2021, from different countries/organisations to augment its efforts in fighting the unprecedented surge in COVID in the country , informed an official release. Various ministries/departments of the Government of India have seamlessly collaborated through a streamlined and systematic mechanism under the Whole of Government approach, for expeditiously delivering the incoming global aid to States and UTs.
