Hyderabad: The Telangana government’s plan to build a grand state secretariat building in Hyderabad took a major step forward on Friday with the federal government granting environmental clearance to the Rs5 billion (Dhs251 million) project.
The clearance came after the state government’s assurance that none of the trees at the site of the proposed complex will be cut for the construction. The state government in its report said that of the 607 trees on the sprawling site 27 will be translocated to other spots in the same area and the remaining trees will be untouched.
The approval came from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest as the state government had granted all other permissions to the project contractor Shaporjee Pallonjee. Preparatory work has begun on the project site spread over an area of 26.29 acres where earlier secretariat buildings were located.

The isolated elephant population of Anayirangal area may soon walk along the road overpasses to cross the NH 85 Munnar-Bodimettu stretch and re-establish contacts with the herds elsewhere.
The Kerala Forest Department has proposed three such facilities, two at Anayirangal and one at Lockhart Gap, to allow the movement of wild animals, especially elephants.
The elephant corridors in the area have been disrupted due to land use changes and blocking of passages. The construction of resorts and the developments taking place along NH stretch have been identified as the major hazards.

All the 6,000-plus gram panchayats that will be reconstituted shortly will have to create a biodiversity register of all the villages in their limits, said Ananth H. Ashisar, chairman, Karnataka Biodiversity Board.
He was speaking at the twelfth edition of biennale Lakes Conference - 2020, at the Indian Institute of Science, on Monday. Senior scientist and conservationist Dr. T.V. Ramachandra, convenor of the conference, said students need to be involved to develop biodiversity registers, and this will not only act as a force multiplier, but also create awareness among the youth on biodiversity and its conservation.
