NEW DELHI: India may begin vaccinating people against
COVID-19 in January and the government s first priority has been safety and efficacy of the vaccine, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has said. I personally feel may be in January in any stage or any week, there can be a time when we can be in a position to give first COVID vaccine shot to people of India Harsh Vardhan told ANI in an exclusive interview.

New Delhi [India], December 18 (ANI): With the COVID-19 vaccination just around the corner, the Union Health Ministry on Thursday said that vaccination for COVID-19 will be voluntary.
The Health Ministry said that it is advisable to receive the complete schedule of COVID-19 vaccine for protecting oneself against this disease and also to limit the spread of this disease to close contacts including family members, friends, relatives and co-workers.
The Ministry further informed that two doses of vaccine, 28 days apart, need to be taken by an individual to complete the vaccination schedule.
For the mass vaccination as per the potential availability of vaccines, the Centre has selected the priority groups who will be vaccinated on priority as they are at higher risk.

As both Serum Institute of India (SII) and Bharat Biotech Ltd (BBL) await the Drug Controller of India (DGCI) s approval of emergency use of their Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines, interim findings from phase-1 trials of BBL s Covaxin was well-tolerated in all dose groups with no serious adverse events. Moreover, after the first vaccination, local and systemic adverse events were predominantly mild/moderate in severity. Currently, the Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) is mulling approving SII s Covishield , BBL s Covishield , and Pfizer s vaccine for emergency use of their COVID vaccines.
