Kolkata, May 7 : In the third letter in three days after taking oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to make arrangements for immediate allocation of at least 550 MT medical oxygen per day to the state so that the latter can make necessary logistics arrangements for smooth supply of oxygen in the health facilities across the state.
The government has not really thought through the vaccination and pricing policy.
The Central government has transferred the responsibility of vaccinating people in the 18-44 age group to the States, and opened up vaccine pricing to market forces, at a time when discussions around the world are about an intellectual property (IP) waiver for COVID-19 vaccines and providing free vaccines.
Here we discuss India’s vaccination policy and its challenges.

The “incompetent” leadership and “callousness” has driven India to the present COVID-19 ‘catastrophe,’ senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said on Wednesday as he blamed the Centre for the shortage of medical oxygen.
In a statement, the former Union Minister held the Centre “fully responsible” for the oxygen crisis and demanded, without naming Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, that he be sacked immediately.
Mr. Chavan also recalled the Union Health Secretary’s remarks made in a press conference on October 20 that India was in an “extremely comfortable position when it came to medical oxygen supply and that there was no shortage”.

There is a see-saw kind of battle, the oxygen sent to hospitals is hardly sufficient for a few hours.

I have some connection with Jaipur Golden Hospital in Delhi in which 20 critical patients died on the intervening night of April 23-24 due to non-supply of oxygen by the government on time, sending shock waves across the country.
On 24th early morning, I got a call asking me if I could help in getting oxygen as the hospital supply would last only till 9 am. I immediately called the Union Health Secretary, who assured me help and asked me to get in touch with the Health Secretary of Delhi Government, to whom he said he would speak right away.
