Sometime in 1863, the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee, was presented a magnificent sword from an anonymous donor. This ivory-gripped masterpiece had an etched blade and elaborate gold-plated hilt crafted by one of Europe’s premier makers of fine firearms and blades: Parisian Louis-François Devisme. Used by its owner only for special occasions, the sword was eventually proffered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant by Lee during the surrender of his forces at Appomattox, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. Grant generously allowed the fine piece to be retained by its owner.

The Republican Party has become “the party of White Supremacy,” but their senators can make amends by convicting former President Donald Trump, liberal Filmmaker Rob Reiner says.
Republican senators must vote to convict former President Donald Trump in his Senate trial, or they will be voting for racism, Reiner tweeted Wednesday:
“The Republican Party has chosen to overtly embrace and become the party of White Supremacy. In the trial of Sedition against Donald Trump, Republican Senators will be forced to choose. Racism or Democracy. It’s that simple.”

I found the Roundup article about Wendy Rogersâ take on the Confederate General Robert E. Lee interesting. It reminded me of the different ways history has viewed Robert E. Lee and the Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
Lee was a brilliant general for the South. He was a tall religious man. His dress was precise. He looked like a general. Hell, even his horse looked like a generalâs horse. He is remembered for being the primary defender of slavery and the Southern way of life.
Grant was short. He didnât dress particularly well. He had a reputation for drinking too much. After many other Union generals failed to end the war, it fell to Grant to save the Union and end slavery.

Facebook screenshot of Christopher Harris, suspect in the Jesus is Black church vandalism and attempted arson.
In the wee hours of the morning on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an arsonist spray-painted the message, “Jesus is Black” in a Roman Catholic Church in Toledo, Ohio, while setting fire to parts of the church. Police later caught up to the suspect, 27-year-old Christopher A. Harris. Harris shot and killed a police officer in a shootout that also claimed his life. Harris’s Facebook account includes multiple posts with the message, “Jesus is Black,” and one post evoking King’s assassination days before the church arson.
