Contesting the Union Labour Ministry’s claims that Employees State Insurance Corporation has reached out to workers during the Covid-19 crisis, the RSS-backed trade union Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh feels there is no special protection to those who are covered under ESI. BMS general secretary Binay Kumar Sinha said in a letter to Union Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar that the workers are deprived of the entitled medical benefits due to conversion of ESI Hospitals as dedicated Covid-19 hospitals.
He said in the letter that the pandemic has affected the working class which is facing loss of income and the attack of Covid-19. As the country witnesses another exodus of migrant workers back to their villages, the Union Labour Ministry has decided to reopen the 20 control rooms which were set up in April 2020.
Union Labour Secretary Apurva Chandra said migrant workers who need any assistance can make use of the control rooms. A release from the Ministry said the officials with the Chief Labour Commissioner will be available in the 20 control rooms and they will address wage-related grievances of workers employed in the Central sphere. The control room will also try and mitigate the problems of migrant workers through co-ordination with various State governments. The Ministry claimed that lakhs of workers used this facility in 2020 and resolved their grievances .

Rules ‘ready’, say officials in Labour Ministry
The implementation of the four new labour codes, replacing 29 Central labour laws, is likely to take place after the ongoing State Assembly elections, according officials in the Labour and Employment Ministry.
An official said the rules framed under the four codes on wages; occupational safety, health and working conditions; industrial relations; and social security were “ready” to be rolled out “soon”. However, the implementation of the codes was “likely after the elections”.
