UNION GROVE â Three neighboring fire departments would merge into a single regional operation, under a newly released plan to improve fire and ambulance service in growing western Racine County.
The idea of consolidating the Union Grove-Yorkville, Kansasville and Raymond fire departments is included in a study showing that existing service, based largely on volunteer firefighters, might be inadequate to serve the regionâs growing population.
Conducted by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum research group, the study was commissioned by the Union Grove-Yorkville Fire Department to examine the departmentâs current staffing and operations.
As an alternative to merging with neighboring departments, researchers found that the Union Grove-Yorkville department could keep pace with increased demand by contracting with a larger fire department or with a private ambulance operator.
UNION GROVE â Peter Hansen, a business owner who rose to the highest levels of Racine County government, is being remembered as a selfless public servant.
Hansen, who served more than 30 years in local and county government, including as county board chairman and county executive, died April 27 at the age of 72 following a three-year battle with cancer.
In recognition of Hansenâs years of service, county officials are considering renaming the County Board meeting room as the the Peter L. Hansen Racine County Board Chambers.
Just two days before Hansen died, he was visited at his home in Union Grove by a whoâs who of Racine County politics, including County Executive Jonathan Delagrave, who told Hansen of the proposed renaming honor.
