The Union Middle School teacher who resigned amid an investigation into potentially inappropriate emails with a student will receive a payout and a promise of secrecy from the district, according to KCRG. The resignation agreement shows that former science teach Mark Hookham will receive his remaining salary for the 2021 school year along with benefits and a $15,000 lump sum payment. The district will also only share he dates of employment if another employer contacts them as a reference. The agreement also states there is no admission of violating district policies, procedures, or laws. Hookham was placed on paid administrative leave in March after parents of a student complained about his email interaction with their child in December. UNION COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) A beloved former teacher in North Carolina has died from COVID-19.
George Rowland passed away Sunday night from the virus after contracting it over the holiday break. Rowland was a retired teacher in Union County and tutored at East Union Middle School. He was a friend, Coworker Dorris Burtrell told WSOC. He was a big brother. He was an uncle and, sometimes, in our school, he was a dad.
Another colleague noted Rowland was an amazing example to the kids in school. Others said Rowland had a passion for teaching and was known for being a sharp dresser. Rowland s LinkedIn profile lists him as having worked for Union County Public Schools since 2001.

MIDDLEBURY A group of 70 Middlebury Union Middle School students will be studying remotely this entire week in light of a recent, positive COVID-19 test confirmed among the MUMS community.
“Led by ACSD’s COVID-19 Coordinator Kelly Landwehr, we met with necessary members of school to help us with contact tracing and make decisions on how to best support our continuity of learning,” reads an email sent to the MUMS community this past weekend by Andrew Conforti, MUMS principal. “We are confident that we ve shared all critical information related to this positive case.”
It was a member of the school’s “Phoenix” team that recorded the positive test, according to school officials.
It took 2 ½ hours, but Union Parks Department employees and volunteers got a toy to every kid who wanted one at the cityâs drive-thru gift giveaway.
The giveaway was held at the end of the Union Area Chamber of Commerceâs reverse parade. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the parade was moved from downtown to the area around City Lake, near the former Clark-Vitt Elementary School.
Traffic moved slowly, particularly early on. From the gift staging area near Union Middle School, brake lights could be seen backed up across the lake on Memorial Parkway. The slow traffic moved onto Clark Avenue then to Park Drive.
