93 NTPC workers missing, 39 still stuck in tunnel: Power Minister R K Singh

Chamoli, Feb 09: With the recovery of five more bodies on Tuesday, the death toll from the Uttarakhand glacier disaster rose to 31, even as a multi-agency operation to rescue around 35 workers feared trapped inside a swamped tunnel at the Tapovan power project in Chamoli district continued on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Union Power Minister R K Singh today said that 93 workers of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) are still missing and 39 still stuck in the tunnel due to the avalanche. We are trying to reach them. We are planning to install Early Warning System as a precautionary measure against avalanche, said R K Singh.
The Union Power Minister R K Singh visited Tapovan on Monday to assess the extent of damage at the project site, a day after the glacier burst in Chamoli district.

JAMMU, Feb 6: To make cold desert carbon-neutral, the Union Government is working towards installation of 10,000 Mega Watts (MW) hybrid renewable power projects in the Union Territory of Ladakh and different agencies are in the process of identifying suitable land and preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for necessary transmission infrastructure.
Official sources told EXCELSIOR that as per the various assessments done till date, Ladakh has a potential of 30 Giga Watts of solar, 5 Giga Watts of wind, 2 Giga Watts of hydro and 300 Mega Watts of geothermal potential and Government of India wants to tap this potential in phased manner in order to make the newly created Union Territory carbon-neutral just as the nation’s Sikkim has made its mark as an organic State in the North-East.
