Cyclonic storm Tauktae had intensified and was heading towards the coast of Gujarat and the Union Territory of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday evening.

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on Saturday held a crucial meet to review the preparations to deal with Cyclone Tauktae which is predicted to hit the Gujarat coast on May 18.
Chairing the meeting, PM Modi asked the officials to take all measures to ensure people are safely evacuated. He also directed that all essential services like power, telecommunications, health and drinking water should not be affected.
Tauktae Cyclone path: The deep depression in the south Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep transformed into a cyclonic storm, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday. The IMD forecast says the cyclone with transform into a very severe cyclone as it gains momentum in the next three days. A red alert (extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20cm) has been sounded in Kerala's Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod and Union territory of Lakshadweep on Saturday. Orange alert of 11-20cm for very heavy rainfall in seven districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur. The cyclone will bring moderate to very heavy rain across the western coast of India from Kerala to Gujarat as it progresses over the next four days. Torrential rains batter Kerala, red alert sounded
Torrential rains accompanied by fierce winds and high tidal waves rocked Kerala and claimed two lives, as it lashed the state since last night forcing the government to shift hundreds of families to relief camps. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the impact of cyclone Tauktae was expected to last the next 24 hours in the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded red alert , indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall above 204 mm in 24 hours, in 9 districts.
