New Delhi [India], January 7 (ANI): A total of 3.04 crore rural households have been provided with new piped water connections across the country under the Centre s flagship National Jal Jeevan Mission, informed Union Minister of State of Jal Shakti MinistryRattan Lal Kataria on Thursday. Since Independence till August 2019, a total of 3.23 Crore rural households (out of total 18.93 crore rural households) had tap water connections, but in a short span of 1 year alone, 3.04 Crore new connections have already been provided to rural households under National Jal Jeevan mission, Kataria said.

A 78-year-old woman died in Karaikal on Thursday, taking the COVID-19 toll in the Union Territory of Puducherry to 636. A medical bulletin said the patient was diabetic.
The U.T. also reported 35 new cases from testing 3,377 samples in the last 24 hours. Puducherry accounted for 15 of the new cases, followed by Mahe (12), Karaikal (7) and Yanam (1).

The Tamil Nadu Public Works Department (PWD) has said the Puducherry Government owes it ₹99 lakh as maintenance charges and for release of water from Veedur dam in Villupuram district.
The Veedur dam, commissioned in 1959, is now a major source of irrigation for villages in Villupuram district and the neighbouring Union Territory of Puducherry.
