The Abia state government, on Thursday, shut down the Union Primary School, Afaraukwu in Umuahia North LGA on grounds that suspected explosives were found in the classroom.
According to the information commissioner, John Kalu, the decision was taken to protect the pupils.
Mr. Kalu said the explosive devices may be relics of the civil war era, owing to “evidence of corrosion”, adding that the state government is collaborating with security agencies to uncover the source and nature of the devices.

There is tension in Umuahia, Abia State, following the discovery of a suspected explosive device by students of Union Primary School, Afaraukwu.
The pupils of the school had found a bag and informed their teachers who alerted the school authorities.
Vanguard gathered that the school has been shut while security agents have been brought in to assess the situation.
Reacting to the situation, Abia State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, disclosed that the government is working with security agencies to unravel the source and nature of the suspected explosive devices found at the school.
The Abia State government has shut down a primary school following the discovery of suspected explosive devices on Thursday, April 8, 2021.
The devices were reportedly found by students of Union Primary School, Afaraukwu in Umuahia North local government area of the state, prompting a temporary closure.
