Unions: aged care system needs radical overhaul

ANMF federal secretary Annie Butler said on March 1 that a succession of federal governments have “done nothing” to address the ever-increasing shortages of registered nurses and qualified carers working in the sector. She said this means that elderly residents have been “made to suffer”. The ANMF said the government’s “immediate response” of $452 million in public funds to be tied to providing better care. Given the billions of taxpayer dollars aged-care providers receive annually, the lack of transparency must be rectified, it said. After a two-year inquiry, involving more than 10,000 submissions and 23 public hearings, the commission produced a 1000-page final report.

Food workers take action for a wage rise, protect meal breaks

United Workers Union secretary Susie Allison said on February 26 that the workers are on a below average wage. Our members worked every day during the pandemic to ensure McCormick could continue to provide food products to restaurants and supermarkets. In return McCormick is now offering these essential workers no pay rise and slashing their conditions. How’s that fair? They are striking for a 3% annual wage increase, no cuts to penalty rates or working conditions. Every time the workers have attempted to negotiate a new one, the boss put forward “zero per cent” pay rise on the table and told the union to take it or leave it. Workers told

, which is pushing for transparent and accountable processes to investigate allegations into judicial misconduct or impropriety, said parliament and the justice system must set up a clear, open and procedurally fair process for all complaints regarding judicial behaviour. “This would provide opportunity to restore public faith in the justice system by showing the willingness of the Judiciary to be held to the same standards and process for accountability as public servants,” it said. The Tasmanian Supreme Court is investigating an allegation of inappropriate behaviour against a Supreme Court judge. TWL said such alleged misconduct “raises issues around power imbalances in personal relationships, and the potential of workplace sexual harassment” which also have the potential to undermine confidence in the justice system.

Indian socialist Kavita Krishnan on farmers protests: Hope lies in the movements

Green Left spoke to Kavita Krishnan, leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, Secretary of the All-India Progressive Women’s Association and participant in the farmers’ struggle against the Modi regime. “The protests are still strong, the farmers are determined that they will not go back and they will not end the protests until the three laws are repealed.”  said Krishnan. It is the harvest season in Punjab and farmers are taking turns going back and forth to deal with the harvest simultaneously with the protest. “The protesters have a lot of support from the Indian public,” said Krishnan.

Union: British court ruling on Uber must flow to drivers here

TWU national secretary Michael Kaine said on February 20 that the court ruling is “unequivocal” and that it has “implications for Australian law”. Gig economy workers have rights, he said. The TWU wants the government to legislate to recognise the rights of rideshare drivers and food delivery riders. It said the need is urgent because of “delivery riders dying on the roads and rideshare drivers being ripped off”. The union wants an independent tribunal to ensure workers have the rights and protections they are entitled to. The TWU, rideshare drivers and food delivery riders visited federal MPs on February 22 to discuss the British court decision.
