New Mexico COVID relief bills move forward during legislative session

AZTEC A bill that would allow essential workers who contract COVID-19 to qualify for workers’ compensation benefits has advanced to the House floor after passing the House State Government, Elections and Indian Affairs Committee on a 5-3 vote on Feb. 26. House Bill 268, or Coronavirus and Workers Comp, was sponsored by Rep. Dayan Hochman-Vigil, D-Albuquerque, Rep. Christine Chandler, D-Los Alamos, Rep. Meredith Dixon, D-Albuquerque, Rep. Daymon Ely, D-Corrales, and Rep. Patricia Roybal Caballero, D-Albuquerque. “House Bill 268 came about because we heard firsthand from constituents who unquestionably caught COVID-19 at work, but were denied Workers’ Compensation,” said Rep. Hochman-Vigil in a press release. “Essential employees put their health and safety on the line every day to provide the services that New Mexicans need. Should they become infected at work, they deserve the same protections they would receive from any other workplace injury.”

Auditor oversees CARES Act funds - Sidney Daily News

Auditor oversees CARES Act funds Berning SIDNEY “I’ll start with a brief report on 2020 funds. Due to the CARES Act funds that were allocated to Shelby County via HB 481 and HB 614, local governments were offered the opportunity to accept a portion of those funds to be used for COVID-19 related expenses,” said Shelby County Auditor Amy Berning. “The state of Ohio dictated the formula that determined how much money was to be allotted to each political subdivision (county, city, township, village). “The grand total received from the state was $6,159,639, of which the county was allocated $3,279,398. The balance of $2,880,241 was split between the city of Sidney and any village or township who had eligible COVID-19 expenses. Again, let me point out that these funds could only be used on COVID-19 expenses.”
