Yenagoa, May 1, 2021 The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have lauded the worker-friendly disposition of Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
The workersâ unions, in a joint address at this yearâs Workers Day celebration, particularly commended Diriâs commitment to prompt payment of salaries and gratuity.
Mr Bipre Ndiomu, the stateâs NLC chairman, who delivered the address in Yenagoa on Saturday, said that Diriâs emergence as governor in February 2020 had been a huge blessing to Bayelsa.
He also praised the governor for standing by the workers at the peak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The federal government has said the N30, 000 national minimum wage is binding on all employers of labour, including state governments and the private sector. Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, made the clarification on Saturday in Abuja during the Workers Day celebrations. This followed agitations by labour over the non-implementation of the national minimum wage by some state governments.
Organised labour, under the aegis of its umbrella organisations, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), bemoaned the high rate of job loses and casualisation of workers in the country.

ZIMBABWE Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president, Peter Mutasa has rallied Zimbabwean workers to evoke the gallant spirit once shown by late former Vice President and one time union leader Joshua Nkomo together with other fallen luminaries whose fingerprints on this front decorate the country’s unionism history.
In an address to mark the Workers Day commemorations Saturday, Mutasa also took a swipe at some opposition MDC politicians for alleged betrayal of the workers’ cause.
He said late founding MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai was turning in his grave after some of his surviving former allies have jumped to bed with Zanu PF while destroying the gains of the labour-based movement.

This came as the Federal Government said state governors had no choice but to pay the N30,000 national minimum wage, warning that any governor not paying was breaching the nation’s law. The unions also sought for general upward salary review for workers, even as it lamented the seemly intractable socio-economic and political predicaments that had enveloped the nation.
