Iowa to end participation in federal unemployment benefit programs Tuesday, May 11, 2021 11:08 AM Iowa will end its participation in federal pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced today. Effective June 13, Iowa will no longer waive employer charges for COVID-related unemployment insurance claims. Iowa Workforce Development cited the strong labor market and recovering economy as the reasoning for the decision, according to a press release. “The overwhelming message we receive from employers these days is the lack of workforce that is adversely affecting their ability to recover from the pandemic,” Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend said in the release. “There are currently over 66,000 job openings posted on [our website.] Our field offices are open and ready to help. Iowa Ending Extra $300 Unemployment Payments
Here s a warning to Iowans who are receiving extra weekly unemployment benefits they are about to come to an end.
Citing severe workplace shortages in Iowa, Gov. Kim Reynolds has announced that the state will end its participation in the federal pandemic-related benefits programs on June 12. Thousands of Iowans are currently receiving the extra $300 weekly benefit.
“Federal pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs initially provided displaced Iowans with crucial assistance when the pandemic began,” Reynolds said in a statement. “But now that our businesses and schools have reopened, these payments are discouraging people from returning to work. Our unemployment rate is at 3.7 percent, vaccines are available to anyone who wants one, and we have more jobs available than unemployed people.”

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa is joining a growing number of Republican-led states to end increased unemployment benefits from the federal government.
Governor Kim Reynolds announced Tuesday the state will stop the extra $300 dollar weekly payments on June 12th.
She said the payments are discouraging people from returning to work, echoing statements from some other Republican governors in the past week.
President Biden s administration says data does not support that argument, instead claiming vaccination rates, childcare and school reopenings are all contributing to a shortage of workers.
Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend said the overwhelming message from employers is the lack of workers, which is adversely affecting their ability to recover from the pandemic.
