Logan has state s second lowest unemployment rate

Among all of Kentucky’s 120 counties, Logan County has the state’s second lowest unemployment rate, according to the latest statistics released last week by the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. In December, the jobless rate in Logan County was just 4.1%. Only neighboring Todd County had a lower rate at 4.0%. Since Todd County is part of a different district, Logan County also had the lowest rate among the 10-county Barren River Area Development District. Monroe County had the second lowest rate at 4.4% and Allen County came in at 4.8%. Other neighboring Kentucky counties included Warren (5.3%), Simpson (4.9%), Butler (5.6%) and Muhlenberg (7.7%).

FAFSA filings drop 19% for KY high-school seniors

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education reported Tuesday that participation of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid has dropped 19% for high school seniors. The form is necessary for students to receive financial aid for college. Although submissions are down 19%, the state has ranked 12th in the country for submissions as of Jan. 22. “The overall percentage of FAFSA filers, which includes high school seniors, current college students and adults, shows a 13% drop over this time last year, according to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority,” the council stated in a news release. The council has launched the FAFSA February campaign, aiming to reverse the downward trend. It will use social media campaigns and other news organizations to encourage completing the FAFSA.

The preliminary December 2020 jobless rate was up 0.3 percentage points from November 2020 and up 1.7 percentage points from the 4.3 percent recorded for the state one year ago. The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate for December 2020 was 6.7 percent, unchanged from November 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Labor force statistics, including the unemployment rate, are based upon estimates from the Current Population Survey of households. The survey is designed to measure trends in the number of people working, and includes jobs in agriculture and individuals who are self-employed.
