Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has protested the implementation of the Career Progression Guidelines by the teachers’ employer saying they were quashed by a court.
Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion said Justice Byrum Ongaya in 2019 quashed the promotions circular, which had limited career progression to those with teachers training certificates.
“TSC has been engaging in an illegality and breaching various sections of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBAs), Code of Regulations for Teachers and clauses of international labour laws,” said Sossion.
While outlawing the plan, Justice Ongaya ruled that TSC should follow the teachers scheme of service in promotions and should align the same to the collective bargaining agreement it signed with the unions.

Summary
Many parents were optimistic that the interruption in the first term would soon be over and their children back in class. In hindsight now, Kenyans were underestimating the disruptive power of the pandemic whose impact they had yet to fully comprehend.
As the Ministry of Education grappled with unworkable school reopening dates in subsequent months when Covid-19 infections spiked, it became clear that pupils and students were in real danger of losing out on an academic year.

The scramble for about 13,000 teachers promotion slots has kicked off amid fears that this could be the last nail to sink the giant teachers union that has opposed the criteria to be used to move tutors to new grades.
In an advert released yesterday, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) says the promotions will be based on career progression guidelines (CPG) that has been subject of contention between the employer and Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut).
