Optimism in Beef Industry Fueled by Strong Demand with Higher Prices Anticipated
Wednesday Mar 3rd, 2021 Despite pandemic disruptions, consumer demand for beef at home and around the globe remained strong in 2020, a trend that will continue in 2021 and beyond, especially as foodservice operations begin to fully reopen. The strong demand, combined with expected higher cattle prices, signal an optimistic future for the beef industry, according to CattleFax, which presented an outlook session during the virtual 2021 Cattle Industry Convention Winter Reboot on Feb. 24.
According to CattleFax CEO Randy Blach, cattle numbers will continue to contract in 2021, and producers will gain leverage on packers and retailers and margin distribution will be more equitable. Packing capacity is expected to increase slowly with the addition of more small-scale plants, and U.S. meat exports will continue to grow. Colorado Cattlemen mid-winter meeting being held virtually
Due to Colorado’s enhanced gathering restrictions, Colorado Cattlemen s Association will implement an alternative virtual event for its 2021 Mid-Winter Conference from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19.
The revised event will provide agency and specialist updates, steering committee discussions, a business session and a state-of-the- industry/association briefing. The virtual meeting is complimentary to all attendees.

Application for USDA specialty grants open now
The Colorado Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for USDA’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. USDA partners with state departments of agriculture through the annual grant program to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops in areas including promotion, education, research, trade and nutrition.

The insect can carry a fatal citrus disease known as HLB.
California farmers have succeeded so far in keeping HLB out of commercial groves.
A psyllid infected with the HLB bacterium, found recently at a Fallbrook residence, was the first to be detected in San Diego County.
