The reason why automakers are not making enough cars and some plants of General Motors, Daimler, Ford, Toyota and Nissan are now idle is an acute shortage of semiconductors, which power functions from brakes to emission controls. “Electrification of vehicles is increasing the content of power chips 10-fold in every car,” notes Pierre Ferragu, an analyst at New Street Research in New York.

Taipei, Feb. 9 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world s largest contract chipmaker, said on Tuesday that it will establish a 3DIC material research and development center in Japan.
TSMC said the plan to establish the R&D center in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, near Tokyo, through investment of up to US$186 million in paid-in capital to set up a 100 percent owned subsidiary in Japan, was approved at a board meeting held Tuesday afternoon.
The investment aims to expand the chipmaker s efforts in 3DIC material development and reinforce cooperation with Japanese counterparts in the field, TSMC said.
DGH not to use Chinese-made speed detectors: minister

Minister of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) yesterday ruled at a ministerial meeting that speed detectors must be accompanied by a signed affidavit that they contain no Chinese-made parts.
The ruling came a few days after a user named “Leo” wrote on Facebook that Eastern Science and Technology Co (東山科技), a local manufacturer who supplies speed measurement systems to the Directorate-General of Highways (DGH), uses components made in Hangzhou, China, and then places its label on the devices.
“Leo” said that speed measurement systems are a “massive surveillance program,” as the systems identify drivers’ license plate numbers and calculate their average speed between two points so that law enforcement can determine whether vehicles are speeding.
