Currently, most equestrian gear, such as halters, reins, and saddles, is made from cow hide leather. Work at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland could provide a similarly durable material that is cruelty-free and environmentally friendly. After overcoming size limitations of its production process, the Centre is now able to produce large sheets of vegan leather sheets from mycelium at consistent quality and with lower costs and waste.
According to VTT’s Senior Scientist Géza Szilvay, the material can be made as strong as animal leather. The work is funded by Business Finland.
Fungal leather production could mean change of tack for equestrians
