White House national security and economic officials will meet with semiconductor makers and auto company representatives later this month on April 12 to discuss the impact ongoing computer chip shortages are having on the U.S., according to a published report Thursday.

INTC) - Get Report in March announced plans to directly compete with TSMC for the business of manufacturing chips for other companies, with a $20 billion investment in two new factories in Arizona. The once-dominant chipmaker is trying to regain momentum and favor in the U.S.
TSMC suppliers also surged on the news, buoyed in part also by Micron’s bullish forecast. Screen Holdings climbed 6%, Tokyo Electron rose 4.7% and ASM International jumped as much as 5.4% on Thursday.
TSMC’s own share price was up 2.6% on the day.

In a letter to customers obtained by Bloomberg, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei said the company’s fabs have been “running at over 100% utilization over the past 12 months,” but demand still outpaced supply.

The Verge reported Wednesday that Cupertino-based Apple will tap Tesla’s battery packs and related technology as part of a solar farm project it spearheaded in 2015 to help power the company’s main campus.
The setup, which was approved by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors in 2020, will consist of 85 Tesla lithium-ion “megapacks” and store up to 240 megawatt-hours of energy, according to the Verge, citing an email from Monterey County’s planning chief.

AAPL) - Get Report on a magnetically attached battery pack for the newest iPhones that would wirelessly charge the handsets.
Shares of the San Jose, Calif. company were climbing 42% to $5.28 at last check.
Bloomberg reported on Friday
that Apple has been developing the attachment for at least a year, and that it has been scheduled to launch in the months after the iPhone 12 line was first released, which was in October.
