Cameco plans on reopening Cigar Lake uranium mine

By News Room Apr 10, 2021 2:45 PM Cameco is restarting its Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan and Orano Canada will resume production at the McLean Lake mill. Production at the mill and the mine were temporarily suspended in December because of the increasing risks with the pandemic. Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel says at the time, the availability of workers in critical areas was shrinking because many employees lived in communities with travel restrictions and contact tracing meant more people weren’t able to come in. Gitzel says Cameco has implemented several enhanced safety protocols, including increased distancing between passengers on flights, mandatory medical-grade masks, increased sanitization and physical barriers in eating areas. There is also a licensed COVID-19 testing facility at the site. The exact date for re-opening hasn’t been clarified yet.

Work on north-central drainage systems continues Monday

By News Room   The second of a three-year, $15 million drainage improvement project begins Monday in the North Central community. “This major drainage project will help prevent ponding during large storms and reduce the risk of basement and street flooding to over 450 homes within the neighbourhood,” says Kim Onrait, Executive Director of Citizen Services. The project includes removal of asphalt and sidewalks, digging a trench in the road to remove the existing storm sewer mains, installing new pipes and water service connections, repaving the road and repairing curbs, gutters, and impacted portions of private yards. In 2021, work will occur in five phases along Athol Street, between Pony Park and 2nd Avenue, and west along 2nd Avenue to Wascana Street. The City will advise residents of each phase, along with necessary closures and restrictions.

Warehouse district liking talk of economic activity in Dewdney railyards

By Mitchell Blair Apr 11, 2021 10:01 AM It is beginning to sound as if some activity will be happening on the Dewdney railyards that will connect downtown to the warehouse district. Talk of a new events centre and a ballpark have piqued the interest of the Regina Warehouse District who feel that economic activity will be a huge positive for them and the city as a whole. Executive Director Leasa Gibbons says there has been some work on the railyards, but it is work no one has really heard about. “It’s not the sexy stuff that has been happening.” Gibbons said. “It’s the environmental stuff so it is nice now to see the stuff that we want to see and we can talk about it.   Anytime you have a situation like this is a district growing up around it like the Forks in Winnipeg with their ballpark or the Ice District in Edmonton with Rogers Place.  All of these things form a synergy.
