Canucks brief momentum extinguished, with playoff hopes soon to follow

Canucks’ brief momentum extinguished, with playoff hopes soon to follow David Rittich got his first win by making just 15 saves, Auston Matthews got on the score against as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-1. Iain MacIntyre | @imacSportsnet April 30, 2021, 1:06 AM Considering what they’ve been through and how the ghosts of COVID-19 and the National Hockey League’s revised schedule have swamped them, it’s probably asking too much for the Vancouver Canucks to deliver many more positive results this season. The best their fans can hope for some nights will be a good effort and a good story, and the Canucks at least provided both of those on Thursday when they lost 4-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in winger Kole Lind’s NHL debut.

Will the Canucks expose Jake Virtanen in the Seattle expansion draft?

Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports A year ago, this would have been unthinkable. The Vancouver Canucks are well set up for the upcoming Seattle Kraken expansion draft this summer. They’re allowed to protect seven forwards, with Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Bo Horvat, J.T. Miller, and Tanner Pearson being five obvious players to keep. They can protect three defencemen, and Quinn Hughes isn’t even eligible for selection. Nate Schmidt and Tyler Myers are the obvious guys to protect on the back end. Olli Juolevi will probably be the third blueliner they protect. They can protect only one goalie, and that’ll be Thatcher Demko. That means Braden Holtby will be exposed, but Seattle might not touch him given his $4.3 million cap hit, including $5.7 million in real dollars being paid out next year, not to mention his declining value as a player.

Holtby solid as Vancouver Canucks edge Ottawa Senators 4-2

Every game is a must win. You want to give yourself the best chance possible, Pearson said. Obviously we have games in hand, which could be the key for us. We’ve got to keep pushing, take it one game at a time and keep on staying in the win column. The Canucks sit eight points behind the Montreal Canadiens, who hold the fourth and final playoff spot, but Vancouver has played five fewer games. The Calgary Flames are sandwiched in between, with four more points than the Canucks and having played six more games. Pearson helped Vancouver (19-19-3) stay in the race Saturday night, scoring the game winner 13:45 into the third.

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck April 24, 2021 - 11:16 PM VANCOUVER - Tanner Pearson admits that he and his Vancouver Canucks teammates are keeping a close eye on the standings these days. The Canucks still linger near the bottom of the all-Canadian North Division, but Vancouver s 4-2 win over the Ottawa Senators Saturday kept the playoff race tight. “Every game is a must win. You want to give yourself the best chance possible, Pearson said. Obviously we have games in hand, which could be the key for us. We’ve got to keep pushing, take it one game at a time and keep on staying in the win column.”
